Kids in the Kitchen nutrition and cooking class

Over the last several months, through talking with clients and socially, I have learned that many parents are interested in teaching their kids about nutrition and/or cooking skills but for one reason or another aren’t sure where to start.

Common questions I’m hearing parents wonder about is what nutrition information should kids be learning? What’s helpful? How can I teach my children to have a healthy relationship with food and avoid the fads/misinformation? No matter your child’s schooling situation, there do not seem to be a lot of great resources out there to teach kids about nutrition, it’s importance or the basics of cooking.

These classes are here to help solve that. Many thanks to the many people behind the scenes who have been supporting and encouraging this idea. A special thanks go out to Wilmington Reformed Church and That Guys Family Farm for being gracious hosts for this idea!

The first three classes presented here are what I’m calling the “pilot program.” If the pilot program is successful, I will further explore additional classes and/or age groups.

Through these three classes, nutrition and cooking will be introduced to your child in a way that is meant to spark their curiosity. Once curiosity is tapped into, learning becomes enjoyable and even easy. It is my goal, that if kids attend all three classes they will come out with the basic know how and skill set for creating a healthy meal for their friends and family.

These particular classes are geared towards adolescents who are 10-14 years old.

Class 1, was held March 25th from 6-8 PM: We explored the different food groups learned about lipid emulsions, made ranch dressing, homemade popcorn and practiced basic kitchen skills. See a synopsis of the first class from my Facebook post here.

Class 2, April 22nd from 6-8 PM: We will be digging deeper into cooking and nutrition skills. Students will be learning the basics of bread making and yeast by preparing their own homemade dough. Then, students will work in teams to make their own focaccia or pizza. While we enjoy our creations, students will learn about how to read a nutrition label.

Class 2 will be held at my home which is located at 743 Ward Road, Wilmington, OH 45177.

Class 3, May 27th from 6-8 PM: Students will have to opportunity to learn about, explore and taste foods grown locally at That Guy’s Family Farm Located at 394 OH-380, Clarksville, OH 45113. The class will be held rain or shine, however, in the event of lightening/storms an alternate weather date will be determined.
